Week Five: Protect Our Care’s Care Force One Rolled Through California, Nevada, and Colorado as Republicans Continue Efforts to Slash Health Care

Senator John Hickenlooper, Representatives Judy Chu, Dina Titus, Jimmy Gomez, Yadira Caraveo, Brittany Pettersen, Attorney General Rob Bonta, The Honorable Lily Griego, State Senator Anna Caballero, Assemblywoman Natha Anderson Headlined “Lower Costs, Better Care” Bus Tour Events

On the fifth week of Protect Our Care’s nearly 12,000-mile “Lower Costs, Better Care” bus tour, “Care Force One” made stops in three states to make sure everyone understands how they continue to benefit from legislation like the Inflation Reduction Act and the Affordable Care Act – while also making it clear the stakes for American health care have never been higher. During each stop, national and local elected officials, health care advocates, and storytellers are sounding the alarm about the threat Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans pose to American health care and celebrating the historic steps the Biden-Harris administration has taken to provide working families the quality, affordable care they need to stay healthy. By passing the Inflation Reduction Act, the Biden-Harris administration and Democrats in Congress lowered premium costs, capped the monthly cost of insulin, and gave Medicare the power to negotiate drug prices. While we celebrate this progress, Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans are fighting to go backwards, raise costs, take away protections for pre-existing conditions, and leave millions of people without critical coverage. MAGA Republicans want us to go back to the days when insurance companies made the rules and could deny people coverage. Next week, the tour continues in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Over six weeks, Care Force One will travel to more than 17 states, make more than 50 stops, and travel nearly 12,000 miles.

STATEMENT: Abortion Care Under Attack In Court Again From MAGA Republicans

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tuesday, October 22, 2024
Contact: Anne Shoup, [email protected]g

Three GOP Attorneys General Have Filed Another Lawsuit Seeking to Limit Access to the Safe and Effective Pill Used in Abortion Care and Throw the FDA Approval Process Into Utter Chaos

Washington, D.C. — Earlier this month, Missouri, Idaho, and Kansas revived their lawsuit seeking to severely restrict access to mifepristone, a safe, effective abortion medication that has been on the market for over 24 years. It was filed before Judge Matthew Kacysmaryk, a federal judge in Texas who oversaw the previous lawsuit which sought to eliminate access to mifepristone. The Supreme Court rejected the previous challenge in June, holding that the anti-abortion plaintiffs lacked standing. The new lawsuit seeks to revive the case and reverse the FDA’s approval of expanded access to mifepristone, end the practice of prescribing mifepristone by telehealth providers, and ban anyone under the age of 18 from using mifepristone.

Meanwhile, just yesterday, the Biden-Harris Administration announced a new proposed rule to require insurance to cover over-the-counter contraception at no cost, just like prescription contraception, which would apply to 52 million people with private health insurance.

Mifepristone is a safe and effective medication that has been FDA-approved for 24 years and is the most common medication abortion regimen offered, accounting for more than 60 percent of all abortions in the United States. If the extreme attorneys general are successful, the repercussions would go far beyond abortion care – it would open the door for the politically motivated removal of other safe and effective drugs from the market, throwing the entire U.S. drug approval process into chaos.

In response, Protect Our Care Communications Director Anne Shoup issued a statement:

“Republicans are playing political games with vital health care services, putting lives in danger and opening the door to throw the entire FDA approval process into chaos. If the lawsuit is successful, any third party with a political agenda can challenge a medication they object to, and judges could ignore experts and arbitrarily rip away lifesaving drugs and vaccines from patients who rely on them. This case is yet another attack by MAGA extremists to deny people the freedom to make their own health care choices, attempting to undermine decades of research and the FDA’s scientific judgment.

“While Republicans continue to wage war on our health care system, the Biden-Harris administration is focused on expanding access to affordable health care. The administration’s new rule will give millions of Americans some peace of mind accessing reproductive health care after the overturning of Roe v. Wade at the hands of Donald Trump, expanding upon their previous work to lower costs, expand coverage, and protect reproductive care. The contrast could not be clearer – Republicans are set on ripping away critical health care and putting lives at risk at the same time the Biden-Harris administration is making sure everyone has the health care they need at an affordable price.”

STATEMENT: Biden-Harris Administration Announces New Rule to Expand Access To Free Contraception

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday, October 21, 2024
Contact: Anne Shoup, [email protected]g

The Affordable Care Act Is the Bedrock of Our Health Care System. As Democrats Continue to Expand on Its Life-Saving Measures, Republicans Want to Rip It All Away.

Washington, D.C. — Today, the Biden-Harris Administration announced their new proposed rule to expand coverage of affordable contraception under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). When this rule is finalized, it will extend contraception coverage for 52 million people with private health insurance. This the largest expansion of contraceptive coverage since 2012 when contraception was first required to be covered under the ACA.

This comes at a time when Republicans’ are doubling down on their decades-long attacks on critical reproductive health care. Since the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, they have been working overtime to implement dangerous abortion bans across the country, block IVF, and make it harder to access birth control. These dangerous restrictions threaten the health and lives of millions, forcing health care providers to close in states across the country. Additionally, they want to eliminate the ACA altogether, cut funding from Medicaid and Medicare, and make prescription drugs more expensive by repealing the Inflation Reduction Act and banning Medicare from negotiating drug prices. The consequences of these restrictions have been most detrimental for women of color, people living in rural areas, and lower-income Americans who face the steepest barriers to accessing care.

In response, Protect Our Care Chair Leslie Dach issued the following statement:

“This is big news for 52 million Americans who will soon have access to over-the-counter contraception at no cost. The Biden-Harris administration is dedicated to advancing reproductive freedom while Republicans are dead set on ripping it away. This new rule will give millions of Americans peace of mind accessing contraception since the fall of Roe v. Wade tore federal protections for many reproductive services away. Not only does Donald Trump repeatedly brag about his role in overturning Roe v. Wade, his first goal as president was to repeal the ACA. and when that failed, he sabotaged the law until the bitter end. As a result, millions of Americans lost their health care coverage and access to the critical care they needed to stay healthy. The Republican ‘Project 2025’ blueprint further attacks women’s health care by calling for a total abortion ban and the removal of safe, effective abortion medication from the market entirely. Patients and families deserve access to medication and treatment without political interference.”
